When it comes to college, most students spend a lot of time trying to figure out how they can save money. Between tuition, room and board, books, etc., college life can be pretty expensive, and it forces people to find ways to pinch money and save here and there. But there are some things that are worth spending a little bit of extra money on. College students have a very unique lifestyle, and so there are certain things they need or value. So while it’s great to buy used books and cut down on delivery pizza, consider spending a little extra on these things:
Shoes
Most students walk a lot more in college than they did in high school. They walk from dorm to class, and from class to another class, or the library, or lunch. There are frequently activities that they’re participating in, and often it’s nice to just wander around campus. As such, it’s important to get quality shoes that properly support your feet. You may feel like a typical college kid in flip flops, but your feet will thank you if you get nice shoes for those miles that you put on your legs.
Furnishings
For 18 or so years, kids grow up in already furnished places. But when you move to college, you’re moving into an unfurnished dorm that you get to make your home. Remember: you’re spending most of your time there now, not at home. You may think that you can use an uncomfortable futon and a folding chair, but these will be your main furnishings for a few years. You don’t have to spend gobs of money, but it’s worth getting a few nice furnishings and decorations so that your new home truly feels like one.
Cologne or Perfume
Cologne and perfume aren’t necessary, but they’re very nice to have, for a few reasons. First off, college students go to a lot of social events, where they want to look and smell nice. And second, college students are very busy with classes, homework, and extra curricular activities; sometimes they’re running around from thing to thing without having the time to stop and shower. Buying a nice cologne or perfume can be the difference between you wanting to avoid people, and you feeling good about yourself in a social setting, and that’s a difference worth investing in.
Coffee Shops
A lot of college socializing happens at coffee shops. They’re a great work environment for you to do homework, and they’re great for dates or meet-ups with friends, or just for spending some weekend down time. As far as off-campus activities go, coffee shops are extremely cheap, and worth spending some money at.
Clothing
If you’re going to a school that’s not in your home city, then chances are that the weather is going to be different than you’re used to. That means that you won’t have all the right clothing. Whether it’s getting a rain coat and some sweaters for a colder climate than you’re familiar with, or some board shorts and flip flops for your new beach climate, it’s important to get a few pieces of clothing that fit the area where you’ll be living for the next few years.
In most cases, it makes sense to save money when you’re in college. But in these areas, consider spending a few bucks, and you’ll greatly enhance your college experience.
